Aventon Pace 500 Review: A Close Look At The Popular Ebike

(Last updated on May 19th, 2023)

The Aventon Pace 500 has been setting the standard for quality hybrid ebikes for years and received new improvements this spring. The third-generation Pace 500.3 has several upgrades aimed at recreational riders, but are those few tweaks enough to make it worth its $1,699 price tag? In this Aventon Pace 500 review article, I will closely examine the popular hybrid ebike and evaluate its features, performance, and overall value.

With many brands vying for a slice of the ebike market, Aventon has released several updated versions of its best-selling models. It’s common sense, though, that the sequels rarely surpass the originals, but did they get it right with the latest edition of the Pace 500? Keep reading for an in-depth look at the Pace’s full specifications and how it compares to rival models.

What Type of Bike is the Aventon Pace 500?

The Aventon Pace 500 is designed as a hybrid electric bike, suitable for commuting, recreational riding, or light off-road use. It features a lightweight aluminum frame, suspension fork, and hydraulic disc brakes for a comfortable and safe ride.

The Aventon Pace 500 is a Class 3 electric bike, which means it is equipped with a pedal-assist system that can provide assistance up to 28 miles per hour. That said, Aventon explains that the Pace 500 comes out of the box as a Class 2 ebike, with pedal assist and throttle going up to 20 mph— it can later be unlocked to achieve its top speed.

The All-New Aventon Pace 500.3

Aventon released the latest Pace 500 in late March of 2023, bringing some seriously cool updates to its longest-standing electric bike. Fresh on the market, the biggest changes include a new torque sensor and turn signal taillights— but I’ll dive deeper into those details later.

The Aventon brand started with the Pace 500 and Pace 350 models, its first electric bike. Their subsequent success got the ball rolling for the brand, and Aventon quickly expanded its ebike range. This model was one of the best electric bikes in 2022 and had the potential to build on that popularity.

The release of the Pace 500.3 and 350.3 marks three generations of tweaks and improvements in pursuit of achieving the ultimate hybrid ebike— and this time, Aventon gets impressively close to perfection.

  • Max. range of 60 miles
  • 28 mph top speed

  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • Total weight 52 lbs.

Is Aventon a Good Brand?

Aventon is generally considered a good electric bike brand, known for producing high-quality and reliable electric bikes at an affordable price point. They offer a range of models with different features and specifications to suit different riding styles and preferences— check out our guide to the entire Aventon brand.

The brand used to manufacture a range of bike styles but has since focused solely on the entry-level electric bike market. This typically included e bikes with rear hub motors instead of fancier mid-drive units, priced around the $2,000 mark.

If you’re looking for a high-end ebike for mountain biking or a lightweight profile, Aventon won’t be your first choice. However, recreational riders shopping on a budget are a great match for Aventon’s affordable and reliable ebikes. To my taste, I think Aventon overperforms on ebike design considering the price, frequently outshining rival brands like Rad Power Bikes and Ride1Up on aesthetics.

Aventon’s bikes have received positive reviews from customers and experts alike, and they are known for their excellent customer service and support. Overall, Aventon is a reputable brand that offers a good value for the price. For riders searching for a less powerful ebike that’s more affordable than the 500, check out the Aventon Pace 350.

Performance Rating 7/10

The Aventon Pace 500 has stuck around for three generations largely because of its fun rider experience and reliable performance. Another bike expert described the Pace 500 as “nothing special, which is its greatest strength,” and I agree. It’s a straightforward hybrid ebike that rides smoothly and provides a big boost, up to 28 mph, when set to Class 3.

Regarding how the Pace 500 feels while riding, it delivers plenty of performance for casual riders. Its wide range of speeds and modes lets you refine the settings to the riding you’re doing. For pedal-free fun, there’s a fast throttle mode that reaches up to 28 mph (that’s fast!), and there are four new pedal assist levels: eco, tour, sport, and turbo.

The Pace 500 rolls through various terrains with confidence, from neighborhood streets to bike paths and city commutes. And for trike enthusiasts, we’ve written a product roundup of the best three-wheel electric bikes on the market.

Riders who desire wildly powerful motors, extra gizmos, and high-end name-brand components won’t be impressed by this package, but most of us out there don’t require such a luxurious setup. Recreational cyclists and commuters will appreciate dependable performance at an affordable price.

Comfort Rating 8/10

The Pace 500 is a hybrid ebike that’s as comfortable as a cruiser while maintaining a more efficient design. Even when you don’t have the pedal assist turned on, riding this bike feels natural because of its lightweight frame and moderately sized tires. Cruiser electric bicycles sometimes go overboard on the comfy touches, making the bike feel slow and clunky, even when using the motor.

The relaxed, upright cruiser frame and swept-back handlebars are the main reasons behind the Pace 500’s high comfort score. This setup encourages confident handling and achieves a pleasurable riding experience that is easy on the body. Additional details include a cushioned saddle with springs and 27.5×2.1” tires wide enough to absorb road bumps and take the sting out of pesky potholes.

Key Features

Frame 4/5

The Aventon Pace 500 ebike has a 6061 aluminum alloy frame designed to be lightweight and durable. Two models have either high-step or step-thru frames, depending on which style fits you best. To my eye, it’s a nice-looking frame that neatly integrates the battery inside the downtube without adding too much heft.

The updated 500.3 edition comes in 4 different colors: sky blue or white (step-thru model) and black or army green (high-step model). The frame features internal cable routing, which helps keep the cables protected and out of the way, and a tapered head tube, which provides additional strength and stiffness.

Unlike many of its rivals, the Pace 500 isn’t a one-size fits all bike and is available in two frame sizes. The Regular frame fits riders between 5’3” and 5’10”, while the Large frame is rated for cyclists 5’10” to 6’4”.

Motor 5/5

Listed in the model’s name, the Pace 500 boasts a 500-watt rear hub motor that delivers a boost via throttle mode or four levels of pedal assist. The ebike ships as a Class 2 bike but can easily be unlocked to Class 3 settings, including a maximum speed of 28 mph. It’s not a high-end mid-drive motor, but that would be asking too much, especially considering the bike’s affordable price tag.

However, this spring’s big news is the upgraded torque sensor on the all-new Pace 500.3 model. As with most entry-level electric bikes, the previous generation used a cheaper cadence sensor to moderate the motor’s power delivery. This type of sensor identifies when the pedals are moving and put out a set amount of power independent of how much force the rider is applying to the pedals.

A torque sensor, on the other hand, tracks how hard the rider is pedaling to apply the right amount of pedal assist at that moment. This difference is especially noticeable during accelerations from a complete stop and climbing steep hills. The result is significantly smoother acceleration, more in sync with the rider’s exerted effort.

Beyond rear hub and mid-drive motors, another way to electrify your right is by retrofitting a motor on your existing bike. To learn more about transforming your bike into an ebike, check out our list of the best electric bike conversion kits.

Battery and Range 4/5

A 48-volt, 12.8Ah lithium-ion battery powers the Pace 500 electric bike. The battery is neatly integrated into the frame’s downtube and maintains a decently slim profile, unlike burlier bikes such as the Aventon Adventure.

Regarding range, Aventon claims that the new Pace 500.3 can travel up to 60 miles on a single charge. This slightly increased from the previous model, even though the Pace 500.2 used the same motor and 12.8Ah battery. Perhaps some internal improvements I don’t know about allow the range to increase. Of course, there’s much less range when using throttle mode because the higher the level of assistance, the faster the battery will drain.

The battery charges quickly, in only about 4-5 hours, using the included 3 Amp Fast Charger. The charging port is located on the side of the battery for easy access. The battery is also removable, which makes it convenient to charge it indoors or to replace it if necessary.

Brakes and Taillights 4/5

The Aventon Pace 500 relies on hydraulic disc brakes for a controlled stop, no matter the conditions. Hydraulic brakes are more powerful and will require less maintenance than mechanical disc brakes, so I appreciate Aventon shelled out for the higher-quality option. Many electric bikes around this price point have mechanical disc brakes or rim brakes, but, considering the Pace 500 is a speedy Class 3 ebike, I expect to see the strongest brakes possible.

Related to the Pace’s braking performance, the new generation model boasts integrated rear lights on the seatstays. Placed directly above the rear wheel dropouts, the bright rear lights have turn signal functionality. This tech-savvy safety feature allows riders to indicate their next move to other cyclists or motorists. There’s also a built-in white light at the front of the bike.

Overall Impression 8/10

In an industry where brand-new models are popping up every season, I appreciate that Aventon has continued to innovate and improve their original electric bike. The third-generation Pace 500.3 is a smart choice for recreational riders looking for a dependable hybrid that stays within budget.

Aventon didn’t reinvent the wheel with the latest generation of the Pace 500, and such drastic changes weren’t needed either— the tweaks and subtle upgrades inch this hybrid ebike closer to two-wheeled perfection. The torque sensor and new turn signal lights are helpful improvements you’ll notice on every ride.

That said, there’s a limit to the performance of a sub-$2,000 electric bike. The rear hub motor adds significant heft toward the back of the bike, and the battery isn’t as efficient as higher-end models. I would also like to have seen a better quality drivetrain to improve shifting with and without pedal assistance.

Our verdict: Reliable and affordable hybrid electric bike with a torque sensor and built-in turn signal lights.

Pros

  • Torque sensor for smoother acceleration and natural-feeling boost
  • Integrated rear light and turn signal lights
  • Competitive price tag
  • Comfortable and stable geometry

Cons

  • Lower-quality drivetrain
  • 500W rear hub motor rather than mid-drive unit

The latest-generation Level.2 is an upgrade to Aventon’s flagship commuter ebike, complete with an integrated rear rack, fenders, and front suspension fork. These added accessories make the Level better suited to frequent commuting and heavy city use than the Pace 500.

The Aventon Level is a fast, reliable, and stylish electric bike ideal for commuting and urban riding, with many city-proof components that make it a joy to ride. Like the Pace 500, this bike is powered by a 500W rear hub motor, but the Level has a higher peak output of 750W. The RadCity 5 Plus electric commuter bike is a versatile and practical e-bike designed for commuting and everyday use. The RadCity 5 Plus is powered by a 750-watt geared hub motor in the rear wheel, providing plenty of power and torque for quick acceleration and tackling hills. That is a big upgrade compared to the 500W motor on the Aventon Pace 500, but it does come with a price jump to $1,999.

Another key feature is the motor’s cadence sensor, the same technology outfitted to the new-generation Aventon Pace 500.3. The motor is paired with a 589-watt-hour battery integrated into the frame’s downtube. The battery can be charged in approximately 5-6 hours using the included charger and provides a range of up to 50 miles on a single charge.

A couple of the stand-out features of the RadCity 5 include the sturdy rear rack fenders and built-in lights. If you like the look of the semi-integrated battery and have the extra cash, this model from Rad Power Bikes is a great choice.
